Regenerative Therapies

Orthobiologics in Orlando

For the knee, shoulder, tendon or ligament that hasn’t healed the way it should. Shawn St. Marie, D.O. uses regenerative products made from donated birth tissue, including Wharton’s jelly and exosomes, to support your body’s own repair, alongside hands-on osteopathic care for the mechanics behind the injury.

Physician-performed · Ultrasound-guided when indicated · Outcomes tracked

The Short Answer

What orthobiologics are

Orthobiologics are biologic products placed right where your body is struggling to heal. The ones used here come from donated birth tissue, such as the Wharton’s jelly of the umbilical cord, screened and processed by U.S. tissue banks. They carry growth factors, structural proteins and cell-signaling messengers called exosomes that help create a better environment for repair.

Because the material comes from donor tissue, there’s no blood draw, bone-marrow harvest or fat harvest from you. And because Dr. St. Marie is an osteopathic physician, your plan also covers the mechanics: how your hips, spine and feet load the injured area, so it isn’t overloaded again.

Treatment Options

Your orthobiologic options

Dr. St. Marie matches the product and the approach to your injury, your imaging and what you want to get back to doing.

Wharton’s Jelly

The cushioning connective tissue of the umbilical cord, rich in collagen, hyaluronic acid and growth factors. Used for joints, tendons and ligaments.

Exosomes

Tiny vesicles released by mesenchymal stem cells that carry proteins and genetic messages between cells, helping coordinate the body’s repair signals.

Secretome

The full mix of growth factors and signaling proteins that mesenchymal stem cells release, used to support a healthier healing environment.

Prolotherapy

A dextrose-based injection that prompts a healing response in loose, irritated or chronically strained ligaments and tendons.

Hyaluronic Acid & Steroid Injections

Conventional joint and soft-tissue injections are still part of the toolkit, and Dr. St. Marie will tell you when one of them is the better fit.

Osteopathic Integration

Hands-on treatment of the mechanics that overloaded the area in the first place, before your procedure and after it.

What It’s Used For

Where orthobiologics fit

Joints & Arthritis

Knee, shoulder, hip and ankle pain from degenerative wear and osteoarthritis, especially when you want an option to try before considering surgery.

Tendons & Ligaments

Rotator cuff and Achilles problems, tennis and golfer’s elbow, patellar tendon pain, and old sprains, including knee MCL and LCL injuries, that never fully settled.

Back & Spine

Chronic back pain with a structural driver, treated together with osteopathic care for the spine and pelvis.

Hair & Skin

Exosomes and Wharton’s jelly applied with microneedling to support hair restoration and healthier skin, including sun damage, fine lines and uneven pigmentation.

Beyond the joints

Dr. St. Marie also uses orthobiologics in recovery plans for some autoimmune conditions and after injury to the brain, heart, liver or kidneys, including stroke and traumatic brain injury. These uses are newer, are considered case by case, and are discussed in detail at your consultation.

Before You Book

Questions patients ask us first

Am I a candidate for orthobiologics?

If you have a joint, tendon or ligament problem that hasn’t healed with rest, therapy or time, it’s worth an evaluation. Your consult looks at your exam, imaging, health history and goals, and you’ll leave knowing whether orthobiologics fit you, and which option.

Where do the products come from?

From donated birth tissue, such as umbilical cord tissue, that is screened and processed by U.S. tissue banks. Nothing is harvested from your own body.

Does insurance cover orthobiologics?

Orthobiologic treatments are self-pay, and the practice doesn’t bill commercial insurance. You’ll know the full cost before anything is scheduled.

What is recovery like?

Expect some soreness at the treatment site for a few days and a short period of modified activity. You’ll get a specific plan for returning to activity, and follow-up is built in.

How many treatments will I need?

Some people need a single treatment and others do best with a short series. It depends on the structure involved and how you respond, and we map it out at your consult.

Are orthobiologics FDA-approved?

No. In Dr. St. Marie’s words: “These orthobiologics are not FDA approved to treat, diagnose or cure any disease; however, we find that they help optimize the body so that the body can repair itself quickly and efficiently.” Every patient reviews informed consent before treatment.

Orthobiologic treatments at this practice are elective, use donated human tissue products, and may be used outside FDA-labeled indications. They are not FDA approved to treat, diagnose or cure any disease. Individual results vary, and every patient reviews informed consent before treatment is scheduled.
